VAIL, Colo. (KDVR) — A Colorado artist, along with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Colorado, announced their intention to sue the town of Vail for violating the artist’s First Amendment rights over an art piece she posted on her social media called “G for Genocide.”
The artist, Danielle SeeWalker, is a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. She was chosen by the town to be featured in its summer 2024 artist-in-residence, meaning she would be painting a mural for the town, among other opportunities the title would have presented.
“They really wanted to have diversity be part of that and really centered it into their programming,” SeeWalker said. “[The Arts in Public Places coordinator] was sort of a personal admirer of my artwork and really enjoyed learning through my artwork in terms of my cultural identity and my heritage as a Native American woman.”
