Amherst County High School’s on-time graduation rate for the 2023-24 school year was 94.3%, down about 1.6% from the previous year.

The on-time graduation rate is up 5% from five years ago, Amherst County Public Schools’ Assistant Superintendent Dana Norman said during the county school board’s September meeting.

“We’re moving in the right direction,” Norman said.

The drop-out rate for the 2023-24 school year was 2.35%, a figure Norman said she is highly excited about.

“In 2019 we were at 7.24% rate,” Norman said. “So, the amount of hard work by our teachers, building of relationships, getting kids what they need, has been tremendous and it is shown by our students in their graduation.”

Norman also presented the school board with extensive data in all county schools for benchmarks based on the most recent Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) testing. All schools were accredited while two of those, Madison Heights and Central elementary schools, were accredited with conditions.
