COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Two Colorado Springs school districts were mentioned in a non-credible social media threat Tuesday, and now 11 News is speaking with a subject matter expert about desensitization when it comes to school threats.

Colorado Springs District 11 and Harrison District 2 were the primary targets of a threat officials later called a “hoax.” School carried on as normal, but this did happen on Count Day which has significant impact on school funding.

“We’ve seen an increase of hoax threats or threats that are coming from other states,” said Susan Payne, founder of reporting system and resource organization Safe2Tell. “It’s certainly a concern that even schools, law-enforcement, or students in general could become desensitized when we are seeing this kind of volume.”

Payne, now working for University of Colorado’s Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence works on school threat assessment, response strategy, and prevention across the U.S.
