HONOLULU (Island News) — A prominent official with one of Hawaii’s most influential unions is facing allegations that he misused union funds. It’s prompted a formal hearing before a panel of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
The case against United Public Workers State Director Kalani Werner will mark at least the second time in four years a UPW leader has been tried for alleged financial misconduct.
The use of local union funds has generated some concerns in Hawaii. A consulting contract along with credit card use has generated questions, involving UPW Local 646; Island News Eric Naktin has the details.
