HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn) held a roundtable discussion on Friday to brainstorm ideas on how the federal government can better support mental health access organizations in Connecticut.

Murphy met with mental health advocates and local leaders who are fighting to increase access to care for residents. According to Murphy, suicide numbers in Connecticut saw a spike since 2010, but have come down in recent years.

Despite numbers decreasing in Connecticut, Murphy said that they are still “unacceptable” across the country, particularly among children and teenagers.

Murphy’s Safer Communities Act provided $150 million in federal funding for the 988 lifeline, which has answered more than 10 million calls in the last two years.
