Police Chief Steve Drew and Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones gave an update on the shooting on Gloucester Drive.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A 17-year-old was fatally shot Tuesday morning in Newport News, police said at a press conference.
At 7 a.m., police responded to a Shotspotter activation in the 5700 block of Arlington Ave at an apartment complex. Officers said when they arrived a teen with a gunshot wound was found in the 700 block of Gloucester Drive, and taken to an area hospital where he later died.
“Right now we do not tie this with any incident that happened a city school,” Police Chief Steve Drew said at a press conference at NNPD headquarters. Mayor Phillip Jones added that it appeared to be a targeted incident, not a random act.
