HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — South Carolina school districts have until January to adopt a plan barring electronic devices in the classroom, and that work has already begun in Horry County.

“We will be developing our policy in collaboration with our schools and district administrators, along with other pertinent stakeholders,” Horry County Schools’ interim superintendent Eddie Ingram said Monday.

The requirement follows a Sept. 3 state Board of Education vote giving public school systems until January to comply with the rule or risk losing financial support.

Myrtle Beach resident and parent Brad Hudson supports the idea.

“I think it’s reasonable to just keep their attention in the classroom and in school in general. Parents are still going to worry about their kids, so maybe have their phones available to them in the school, but just not when they’re supposed to be learning,” he said.

State education officials said the prohibition is supported by teacher-based feedback.
