TALENT, Ore. – Sunday is the four year anniversary of the devastating Almeda Fire that destroyed thousands of structures. Even years after the fire, work continues, with local organizations like Maslow Project.

Building the community up through education, transportation and housing

The Maslow project helps connect individuals struggling with housing, food insecurity and more. It’s something they’ve been doing since 2009. Education program director Cheyenne Nichols told Newswatch 12 The Maslow Project ready to help survivors immediately.

“We were already set up in a way that we could sort of respond to a crisis and be immersed within the communities,” Nichols said.

After many homes were destroyed in the 2020 fire, the need for those resources grew. Nichols said the work is still ongoing.

According to statistics from the State of Oregon, Jackson County has some of the highest numbers of homeless students. Nichols said that even though there is this huge challenge in Jackson County, The Maslow project is grateful for the work other outreach organizations are doing as well.
