Community walks for Sickle Cell Awareness Month in Flint | News [Video]

The walk was to raise awareness about the pain those with the sickle cell feel every day while raising money for a cure.

FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) – September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

According to the Center for Disease Control, the inherited disease affects 100 thousand people in the United States and can cause pain among other serious health issues.

Saturday morning Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle sponsored a Sickle Cell Awareness Walk at Flint’s Max Brandon Park.

Event organizers say the reason for the walk was to raise awareness among the public and healthcare providers alike about the pain those with the disease feel every day.

The Red Cross was there to provide people information on Sickle Cell disease and encourage people to sign up for a blood drive.

 Hurley Medical Center and Michigan United provided first aid services to participants.
