US Signs International Treaty on AI, What it Means for Tech Industry [Video]

The U.S., along with the European Union and the U.K., has signed the first legally binding international AI treaty, known as the AI Convention, however, the impact on U.S. tech companies may be limited to non-existent.

This landmark agreement, developed by the Council of Europe and in the works since 2019, aims to address the risks posed by artificial intelligence while promoting responsible innovation, getting many countries around the globe on the same page.

Barry O’Sullivan, professor at the School of Computer Science & IT at University College Cork, Ireland, and a Fellow and a member of the Executive Council of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), told Newsweek that the convention is “essentially a set of principles that states are expected to uphold.”

He noted that while the agreement sounds ambitious, it is “weaker than the EU AI Act” and doesn’t introduce new obligations for companies in the U.S.
