Tribal police and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office are reminding the public to not disturb an area if remains are found.

CASS LAKE, Minn. — Human remains believed to be several hundred years old were recently found on the shores of Leech Lake, prompting law enforcement to remind the public about being respectful if this is something you ever encounter.

In a joint press release, authorities from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Leech Band of Ojibwe Police said authorities were contacted Saturday night by wild ricers on Leech Lake.

Deputies responded and found what they believe are the remains of three individuals that are several hundred years old on the lake’s shore. The Leech Lake Heritage Sites program – along with the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council – are helping make sure the site and remains are secure, with plans to preserve and restore them to their original state.
