Why did Texas State Rep. Shawn Thierry swap to Republican party [Video]

HOUSTON — Months after losing her reelection bid in the Democratic primary, Texas State Rep. Shawn Thierry of Houston announced she’s switching political parties.

The former Democrat cited progressive policies that she “cannot, in good conscience, support,” like access to gender-affirming care for minors or allowing transgender people in women’s sports.

In a lengthy statement on X, Thierry wrote that she was raised and has voted as a Democrat her whole life but said she no longer recognizes the party. She went on to praise the Republican Party’s economic and social policies, including the parental rights movement in education.

“It’s the party of parents, believing that they have the fundamental right to determine the best educational environments for their children to learn, grow, and succeed,” Thierry wrote in the post.
