Ketchikan leaders share landslide-related resources during meeting [Video]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Wednesday some Ketchikan residents were given the all-clear to reenter their homes, but with rain picking back up, another landslide remains a possibility.

One person was killed and several others injured on Sunday when a large swath of the hillside abruptly swept across Second and Third avenues. Ketchikan Mayor Dave Kiffer called it the largest such slide in his 65 years living on the island.

Ketchikan schools will also remain closed until Tuesday, Sept. 3, the superintendent of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District announced Thursday. He mentioned that buses may be delayed as school picks back up, and added that until then, Ketchikan High School will be open as a shelter until 7 p.m. Thursday, at which time the shelter will be moved to the Armory at 645 Jackson Street, starting Friday morning.
