CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The City of Cedar Rapids is contributing to the effort to bring a YMCA facility to the College Community district.
The city council approved the development agreement during a meeting on Tuesday.
The Prairie Summit YMCA is a $43 million project that voters in the College Community District approved last year. It will be located on the north side of 76th Avenue, just west of Prairie Heights.
It will offer a competition-size swimming pool with diving capabilities, a recreational pool with a splash pad, an indoor walking and running track, a turf field, basketball and multipurpose courts, and a cardio and weightlifting area, among other offerings.
The contribution from the City of Cedar Rapids, which is valued at around $2.5-$3 million, focuses on the public infrastructure support and the indoor walking track, including:
- A roundabout to be constructed at 76th Street SW
- The extension of the sewer system to the new facility
