SELMA, Ala. (WSFA) – A student with Selma City Schools died Friday, the superintendent confirmed in a weekend statement.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our high school student scholars,” Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd said, “Au’Terrious Walter, who passed away Friday night.”

Byrd urged the community to respect Walter’s family’s privacy and to “allow them the space they need to mourn.”

Walter, a 16-year-old sophomore, was descried by the superintendent as someone with much potential. Counseling services will be offered to the boy’s schoolmates in the upcoming week.

Walter’s cause of death has not been released.
