A 16-year-old girl who was shot and killed after an altercation with Anchorage police would have started school this week.

Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case held a press conference addressing the incident and recent officer-involved shootings, announcing a series of actions in response.

“We cannot and we will not accept this as a new normal in Anchorage,” said Mayor LaFrance in a statement. “We lost a young person in our community who should have been starting her first day of school today. We cannot take back the pain associated with this loss, but we can do everything in our power to make sure this doesn’t happen again in Anchorage.”
