I receive racism, abuse, and threats regularly on social media.
In fact, this hate became so bad that I decided to do something about it. So early last year I started calling people out for it through what I like to call my Block of the Week on social media, using the hashtag #ButlerBlocks.
Not only does it provide accountability for those who abuse me, it also educates people on the type of abuse I – and others like me – face on social media.
Every week it is filled with racism, misogyny and all kinds of hatred. Only this week, someone has called me the n-word. Racist abuse has sadly become a regular occurrence for me.
All of this to say, the far-right needs to learn that there is a difference between free speech – which we all want to protect – and hate speech.
