JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The community gathered in Carver Park this weekend for Johnson City’s annual Emancipation Saturday event. Tennessee’s Emancipation Day is celebrated on Aug. 8.

Melissa Morrison, an event organizer, said the day is about bringing the community together to celebrate and learn about Emancipation Day in the state.

“It feels good to be able to organize this, to bring everybody together,” said Morrison. “It’s really good when people come together and they support you. Emancipation [Day] was when the slaves were really free on August the eighth. So, we want to come together. Everybody will do Juneteenth. We decided to do Emancipation Day, so we just celebrated.”
