PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A preschool is threatening to sue Multnomah County over its new deflection center.
The facility in northeast Portland is scheduled to open on Sept. 1 and is part of the county’s effort to create a pathway to recovery instead of jail for those arrested on drug charges.
A lawyer representing Escuela Viva Community School, which sits about two blocks away, sent a letter on Thursday to the county and those involved in the deflection center demanding a pause to the center’s development and threatened to sue if it moves forward.
“Escuela Viva demands that the Leadership Team immediately pause the project and abandon the artificial September 1 deadline,” wrote attorney David Watnick in the letter. “If you do not, we will pursue all appropriate measures to prevent the opening of the Deflection Center, including litigation.”
