Free backpacks, haircuts given by Las Vegas school ahead of academic year [Video]

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The first day of school in Clark County is approaching, and a Las Vegas Valley school is helping students prepare.

Delta Academy held their annual “Barbers and Backpacks” event Monday. Students received free backpacks, classroom supplies, haircuts and more.

The school supplies and toiletries were all donations from the community.

“Your kids are gonna pretend that they don’t want to come back to school, but they do. They give you grief in the car but then they walk in the building and they’re happy and surprised to meet with their friends,” said Dr. Lashon Fredricks, high school principal at Delta Academy. “We see it every day. Then they walk through the building and it’s a big smile.”

Fredricks also recommends getting kids on a sleep schedule now so they are well rested ahead of Monday.
