Authorities in South Brunswick announced that a raccoon tested positive for rabies earlier this month, the first confirmed infection in the township this year, but the third confirmed case in Middlesex County, according to officials.

Authorities in South Brunswick were alerted to an interaction between a raccoon and a resident’s dogs in the area of Deans Lane on July 20, officials said in a press release. Animal control trapped the raccoon and sent it to the state laboratory for testing, which confirmed the rabies infection on July 24.

South Brunswick authorities said in the release that they were continuing to monitor for additional cases within the township and asked residents to report wild animals demonstrating unusual behavior to the South Brunswick Township Police Department.

Authorities also recommended residents avoid contact with wild animals and immediately report any bites to the South Brunswick Health Department or police and seek medical attention.
