BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Southern University is embarking on a revolutionary project to enhance feminine hygiene products through sustainable practices. This comes after a study revealed toxins and heavy metals contained in most tampons.

Absorbent natural fibers such as wool, hemp and cotton will be used to create reusable and disposable products, providing safer and eco-friendly options for women.

Dr. Samii Kennedy Benson is overseeing the Farm to Feminine Hygiene project and says the goal is to “research the current state of feminine hygiene products on the market, and we are looking to replace those materials with natural materials that we have growing on campus.”

Beyond research, the project also includes an educational component. Women and girls will benefit from workshops promoting both health and empowerment.

In addition to this, the project received a $600,000 grant to create a production lab establishing the first fiber processing center in Louisiana.
