Former Decatur mayor Don Stanford dies at 82 [Video]

DECATUR, Ala. — The City of Decatur announced the death of former mayor Don Stanford on Friday. Stanford was 82 years old. In a social media statement, the city said that Stanford “[led] us through challenging times with his steady hand and unwavering commitment to the well-being of our city.”

The city’s statement, in full, reads as follows:

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of former Decatur Mayor Don Stanford at the age of 82. Mayor Stanford served our community with distinction from 2008 to 2012, leading us through challenging times with his steady hand and unwavering commitment to the well-being of our city.

A lifelong resident of Decatur, Mayor Stanford was a graduate of Decatur High School and Athens State. His dedication to public service extended beyond his time as mayor, having previously served as postmaster in both Danville and Trinity.
