With Salt Lake City expected to be formally awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics on Pioneer Day, officials are planning a live celebration of the announcement — starting at 3 a.m.

“Utahns young and old cherish the core memory of the 1995 celebration at Washington Square when we were awarded the 2002 Winter Games,” Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said in a news release Monday. “It’s the foundation of our Olympic legacy and I’m thrilled to welcome all to commemorate another historic moment for Salt Lake City and Utah.”

A noon local time announcement at the start of the Paris Olympics means an early party in Salt Lake City. Still, Utah planners expect a crowd of thousands with people camping overnight ahead of the Pioneer Day parade downtown.
