WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Firefighters and police in D.C. rescued five dogs while responding to a water leak call on Monday, officials said.

In a post on the X platform, DC Fire and EMS said crews were called to Fendall Street Southeast for a water leak.

While on the scene, firefighters found five “abandoned” and “neglected” dogs. Responders called the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA).

DC Fire and EMS shared a video of MPD officers and a firefighter gaining access to the apartment while the dogs barked.

Officials said that all of the dogs were safely retrieved.

HRA told DC News Now that its officers had removed a mother dog and her puppies from the apartment unit. Humane Law Enforcement officers are investigating the case, and officials could not comment further as of late Monday afternoon.
