Local authorities are holding a press conference after a road collapsed in south China’s Guangdong Province.

The death toll has risen to 36 after part of an expressway collapsed, causing 23 vehicles to plunge down a hillside, local authorities said.

Another 30 people are receiving hospital treatment. The incident happened around 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday on the Meizhou-Dabu Expressway in Meizhou. Emergency operations are ongoing.
