Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners, known as SAFE nurses, provide the highest level of care for sexual assault victims, something that can help with healing and future prosecution, but between six to eight Maine hospitals don’t have any SAFE nurses on staff.8 Investigates found hospital staffing and lack of regulation could mean some sexual assault victims are slipping through the cracks. “These are resources that just every hospital just really should, should have,” said Shaun Johnson, a SAFE nurse and regional program coordinator for SAFE training at the University of New England. When they show up at an emergency room, best practice says sexual assault victims should be offered a sexual assault kit.
