LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– 30,000 people, including union members, elected officials, and community leaders, participated in the 66th Annual Labor Day Bridge Walk Monday.

Thousands of people crossed the Mackinac Bridge, following a 1958 tradition.

The walk celebrated the power of Michigan workers and unions and honored the legacy of American laborers at home and across the country, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II said in a news release.

People took to the bridge between 7 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., with some turning around halfway through and some walking all the way across.

The span between the Lower and Upper Peninsula was shut down by local law enforcement to motor traffic for the event.

The Mackinac Bridge re-opened promptly at noon.
